A chill in the air has us looking forward to Philadelphia’s wintertime diversions, and Penn’s Landing’s longstanding Blue Cross RiverRink amps up the ice skating experience on the waterfront by once again transforming the annual rink into a bona fide winter wonderland.

Last season’s Waterfront Winterfest returns in 2015, now a permanent addition to the annual outdoor ice rink on the Delaware River Waterfront.

Opening to the public right after Thanksgiving Day on Friday, November 27, Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest takes the perennial good times of the rink to a whole new level, transforming Penn’s Landing into a winterized riverfront park for the entire season.

Those who are still lamenting the seasonal close of Spruce Street Harbor Park and Summerfest now have a reason to celebrate: Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest is essentially be a cold-weather version of the lauded summertime destination.

Open seven days a week from November 27 through February 28, 2016 — including holidays! — Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest will house an Olympic-size skating rink overlooking the Delaware River, ski chalet-style lodge and winter garden with recycled shipping containers, a heated tent, holiday trees, fire pits and plenty of cozy seating.

New For 2015

New this year, the site will include tons more seating both indoors and out, a 360-degree deck around the skating rink, expanded food options from Garces Group and others (think amazing hot chocolates, holiday treats and more), more twinkling lights and awesome new themed events.

Plus, the winter garden will offer the added bonus of brand-new winter warming huts situated around some of the firepits. These cozy shelters, outfitted with seating and heat elements, will make for a perfect base camp for an all-day hangout at Winterfest.

Of course, special events will be announced in the coming months for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Plus, expect one heck of a bash for New Year’s Eve in conjunction with the 6 p.m. and midnight fireworks presented by SugarHouse Casino, as well as other special nights throughout the season, including a winter beer festival.

For now, mark those calendars for opening day Friday, November 27 and the huge tree-lighting ceremony on Friday, December 4.

Get ready to practice your double axel and sip craft brews beside the fire, Philadelphia.
